Dear Friends,

This is an exciting time to be part of the Hospital for Special Care (HSC) family as we focus on excellence and execution to drive growth.

With the announcement of President and CEO, Dr. John Votto’s retirement as of October 1, 2016, the Center of Special Care board implemented a succession plan with the appointment of Lynn Ricci, Chief Operating Officer, to succeed him. Lynn began serving as President and CEO of the Hospital for Special Care effective October 1, 2015. Dr. Votto remains as President and CEO of the Center of Special Care until Oct. 1, 2016 when Lynn will become President and CEO of both entities.

In partnership with Ms. Ricci’s appointment, Dr. Paul Scalise, Chief Medical Officer, was promoted to Executive Vice President. Dr. Scalise will lead all clinical strategy and care delivery for the hospital.

With the announced transition, we are committed to the continuity of our senior leadership team and to preserving the special culture essential to HSC’s success.

We are grateful for and acknowledge the integral role Dr. Votto has served in establishing HSC as a nationally recognized leader in long-term healthcare. After twenty-six years as a leader with the hospital, he leaves an extraordinary legacy that will serve the hospital well into the future. Retirement for Dr. Votto does not mean the end of his service with the hospital. We are pleased to affirm Dr. Votto’s continued role in expanding the research capacities of the hospital as well as serving as a resource on national healthcare matters. Meanwhile, with distinguished records of accomplishment at HSC, Ms. Ricci and Dr. Scalise are uniquely qualified and energized to continue the momentum.

Mindful of our mission, this year we expanded our autism services to include an in-patient autism unit. In doing so, we created thirty-four challenging new positions and eagerly welcomed the new employees to our family. We are extremely proud of the expertise and value we offer in caring for this underserved population. This endeavor was made possible with the support of many people within and outside the organization…a true team effort.

In all we’ve accomplished at HSC, teamwork has always been a prevalent factor in our culture. This teamwork is built on trust, empathy, appreciation, and management. The true strength of our team lies in recognizing the unique skills and characteristics that all staff possess and how the sum of all of those talents impacts our success.

For the third straight year, HSC was recognized as a Hartford Courant/Fox CT “Top Workplaces” and has been nominated for a fourth year in 2016. We take great pride in the superior care provided to our inspirational patients and the tremendous culture embraced by all of our dedicated employees.

The Board of Directors and staff of the hospital continue to look at ways to optimize strategy, programs, and sustainability. By focusing on excellence and execution, we present a transparent compelling case for our programs to all stakeholders.

We have so much to be proud of and so much more to look forward to as we celebrate the hospital’s 75th anniversary this year. You’re a big part of the celebration so please stay tuned and engaged!

Thank you all for your gracious support and commitment to the hospital. All the best in health!
